  • Having healthy hair is a part of equation that women use to measure their beauty and  appearance.
  • Your hair not only helps makes you look attractive and beautiful, but also protects and helps to maintain body temperature.
  • Hair cushions your body against injury, and the hair your nose, ears and around your eyes protects you from dust and other foreign particles.

STRUCTURE OF HAIR:

  • Hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin. These strong proteins give the hair strand its structure.
  • A single strand is composed of three layers that make up its structure.

  • Hair grows everywhere on the external body except mucous membranes and glabrous skin i.e., on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and on the lips.
  • Hair growth occurs in three stages. Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.

COLOR OF HAIR:

  • All natural hair colors are the result of two types of hair pigment.
  • Both of the pigments are melanin types, produced inside the hair follicle and packed into granules found in the fibers.
  • Eumelanin is the dominant pigment in dark blond,brown hair and black hair.

  • Pheomelanin is the dominant pigment in red hair.

  • Blond hair is the result of having little pigmentation in the hair strand.

  • Grey hair occurs when melanin production decreases or stops.

  • It is important to know about hair type for maintaining and caring your hair in a proper way.
  • Basically, there are four types of hair.

Oily hair

Dry hair

Normal hair

Combination hair

  • One simple and very effective way of determining your hair type is with the help of

tissue paper test.

  • Before taking this test, you should wash your hair and scalp with shampoo one day before.

Determining Oily Hair:

  • Take tissue paper and press it at the center of the head and on the sides behind the ears.
  • Do not rub tissue paper on the areas just press on it.
  • A careful look at tissue paper will let you to know your hair type.
  • If you happen to find any traces of oil in the tissue paper, your hair is oily type.

Reasons for oily hair:

  • Over production of sebum from the scalp leads to greasy hair.

How to control oily hair:

  • The key in controlling oily hair is to remove the sebum adequately from the scalp.
  • Wash hair frequently with shampoo designed for oily hair for adequate sebum removal.

Determining Dry Hair:

  • Take tissue paper and press it at the center of the head and on the sides behind the ears.
  • Do not rub tissue paper on the areas just press on it.
  • A careful look at tissue paper will let you to know your hair type.
  • If tissue paper looks dry after this test, your hair is of dry type.

Reasons for dry hair:

  • Blow drying, over exposure to sunlight, swimming and wind can cause dry hair.
  • Using hair products that contain harsh chemicals also leads to dry hair.

How to control dry hair:

  • Use the right dry hair shampoo or mild shampoo and acid balanced conditioners can be helpful in

treating your hair.

  • Apply hair oil ad massage the dry flaky scalp frequently to avoid dry hair.

Determining Combination Hair:

  • We can also determine hair by a close look at your hair.
  • If your scalp is oily and your hair ends are dry and split, you are most likely to have

combination skin.

Tips for combination hair:

  • Combination hair need separate attention to the scalp and hair ends.
  • Wash your head often but also apply oil and conditioner to hair ends.
  • If possible, trim hair ends to avoid split ends.

Determining Normal Hair:

  • We can also determine hair by a close look at your hair.
  • Normal hair will appear shiny and non greasy.
  • This hair type is easy to manage and stays good looking for even after a week after washing.

Tips for normal hair:

  • Normal hair requires less attention than the other types.
  • Just use shampoo, conditioner and oil at regular intervals and in a balanced way.
